Tattoo aftercare – how to look after a fresh tattoo
A fresh tattoo is a wound. How you care for it largely decides how it will look in the end. Below are general rules – always follow the instructions your artist gives you first.
The first hours
Remove the wrap or dressing as your artist advises.
Washing
Wash the tattoo with clean hands, lukewarm water and a gentle, fragrance-free cleanser. Pat dry with a disposable paper towel – don’t rub.
Moisturising
Apply a thin layer of the product your artist recommends. Too much cream stops the skin from breathing.
Healing stages
The first days
Redness, slight swelling and some oozing are normal.
Around 1–2 weeks
Peeling and itching. Don’t scratch or pick the scabs.
The following weeks
The skin may look dull – the deeper layers are still regenerating.
What to avoid while it heals
- swimming pools, saunas, baths and the sea,
- sun and tanning beds,
- tight clothing that rubs,
- intense training that puts strain on the tattooed area.
Long term
A high-SPF sunscreen and moisturising help keep your tattoo sharp and contrasted for years.
When to see a doctor
Increasing pain, swelling, pus, fever or spreading redness are signs to contact a doctor straight away. Let us know, too.
