Nose piercing – types, healing and preparation

In short: the classic, easiest nose piercing to start with is the nostril – small, easy to match to your style and relatively simple to look after. Healing usually takes a few months (APP Benelux gives 3–6 months for a nostril), and during that time hygiene, patience and leaving the jewellery in are what matter most. At SHADY TATTOO in Wieluń, nose piercing is done by Martyna – ask about the procedure and jewellery when you book.

Types of nose piercing

Nostril

The classic piercing on the side of the nose, in the curve of the nostril. The jewellery can be barely visible or a clear accent. Which side? A matter of taste – look at how you usually wear your hair and which side you prefer in photos.

High nostril

Placed higher on the nostril, closer to the bridge. It needs the right nose anatomy and usually takes longer to heal than a classic nostril.

Septum

A piercing through the nasal septum – not the cartilage, but the thin strip of soft tissue just below it (the “sweet spot”). According to APP Benelux, a septum usually heals in 4–8 weeks or longer. The jewellery can often be flipped up inside the nose to hide it.

Other nose piercings

There are also bridge piercings and vertical nose-tip piercings. These are rarer, more demanding piercings, and not every nose suits them.

Ask when you book which nose piercings we do at the studio and what would suit your face.

How long does a nose piercing take to heal?

Approximate healing times according to APP Benelux:

  • nostril – about 3–6 months,
  • septum – about 4–8 weeks or longer.

A piercing often looks healed before it really is – the skin outside closes faster than the channel inside. Don’t change the jewellery yourself just because it no longer hurts; ask a piercer.

How to prepare for a nose piercing

  • eat a meal beforehand and get enough sleep,
  • don’t drink alcohol before the appointment,
  • tell us about any conditions, allergies (e.g. to metals) and medication, especially anything affecting blood clotting,
  • don’t come with a cold, cold sore, infection or irritated skin on your nose – let us know as soon as possible; an appointment can be rescheduled no later than 3 days before,
  • plan the first weeks: glasses resting on your nose, face masks and frequent nose-blowing can irritate a fresh piercing.

Jewellery for a first nose piercing

Fresh piercings usually get jewellery made from low-allergy materials such as implant-grade titanium, sized to the thickness of the nostril with room for swelling. You’ll discuss the type and material with Martyna before the procedure.

Aftercare and when to see a doctor

For a nose piercing, the key things are clean hands, gentle nose-blowing and keeping cosmetics away from the piercing. Don’t remove the jewellery while it heals. Increasing pain, swelling, thick pus, fever or jewellery sinking into the skin are signs to contact a doctor. Full step-by-step rules: nose and navel piercing aftercare.
