Couples tattoos – ideas and how to plan one together

By the SHADY TATTOO team · 22 October 2026
In short: a shared tattoo can be a lovely symbol of a relationship, but it’s worth thinking through. The best ones still make sense on their own – complementary symbols, a meaningful place, something from nature. Each of you should choose a placement and size that suits you. We’ll work out the details with you at a free consultation.
Is a couples tattoo a good idea?
A couples tattoo is more than decoration – it’s a decision you make together for years to come. Before you go for it, ask yourselves:
- would each of you want this design even if it weren’t “shared”?
- does the motif actually mean something to you, or is it just a trend?
- are you ready for a visible spot, or would you rather keep it discreet?
Many couples choose motifs that tell their shared story but still look good and read well on their own. That’s a safer bet than, say, a partner’s name.

Couples tattoo ideas
We don’t do off-the-shelf designs – every design is made individually. These are directions many couples start from:
- complementary symbols – two elements that form a whole together (e.g. two halves of one motif),
- a date or the coordinates of a meaningful place – small and discreet,
- motifs from nature – flowers, branches, mountains, waves, the moon and the sun,
- one symbol in two versions – the same motif adapted to each person’s style,
- small lettering – a word or short quote that means something to you both.
For a wider look at choosing a motif you won’t regret, read how to choose a tattoo design.
Placement and size
You don’t need the same spot or the same size. Places that suit small shared designs include the forearm, wrist, ankle and collarbone area. Keep in mind that very small designs with fine detail lose clarity over time – give the design a bit of room.

Style: fine line or black & grey
- Fine line – thin, delicate lines; great for small, subtle designs and lettering.
- Black & grey – shading in black and grey tones; gives more depth, e.g. for nature motifs or pet portraits.
You can go for the same style or different ones – what matters is that the designs work together.
How to book a couples tattoo
- Describe your idea – motif, placement and approximate size for each of you, plus references.
- Free consultation and quote – we’ll refine the design so both pieces work together.
- Booking – the deposit is set individually (BLIK or cash), and you can reschedule no later than 3 days before. Ask when booking how best to plan the appointments for the two of you.
Remember: we only tattoo adults (18+). Want to give someone a tattoo instead? Take a look at our gift voucher.
Before you decide
- give yourselves time – a good idea still feels right a few weeks later,
- choose a motif you’d each like on its own,
- get ready for the session – see preparing for a tattoo.
Frequently asked questions

No. Many couples choose complementary designs or the same motif in two versions.
What size should a shared tattoo be?
Big enough for the details to stay readable for years – very small designs lose definition over time. We’ll advise at the consultation.
