How to choose a tattoo studio – a step-by-step guide

By the SHADY TATTOO team · 21 October 2026
In short: you can recognise a good tattoo studio by a portfolio in the style you want (including healed work), sterile single-use materials, an honest consultation, detailed reviews and clear studio rules. Price should not be your only criterion.
A tattoo is a decision for years, often for life. That is why choosing the studio matters as much as choosing the design. The good news: you don’t need to know tattooing techniques to tell whether you’ve found the right place. You just need to know what to look at. Below are the criteria we recommend to our own friends – whether they end up choosing us or another studio.
1. Start with the portfolio, not the price
The portfolio is the most important source of information about a studio. It shows not only the level of skill, but also the style an artist feels most at home in. For example, see our fine line tattoos (page in Polish).
What to look for in a portfolio
- A consistent style – if you dream of a realistic portrait, look for a studio that shows many realistic pieces, not just one.
- Lines and transitions – lines should be even and clean, shading smooth, without patches or visible “steps”.
- Photos of healed tattoos – a fresh tattoo almost always looks striking. The real test is how it looks once healed.
- A range of body placements – designs fitted to the anatomy show experience in design.
You can see our work in the portfolio and on the studio’s Instagram and Facebook.
Style matters
Not every studio does everything equally well. If you are interested in realism or black & grey, choose a place that specialises in those styles. Matching the style to the artist is half the battle.

2. Check hygiene and safety
This is the one criterion with no room for compromise.
Questions worth asking
- Are needles and cartridges single-use and opened in front of you?
- Is the workstation covered with film and disinfected after every client?
- Does the artist work in single-use gloves?
- Does the studio ask about your health, medication and allergies?
A good studio won’t be offended by these questions – quite the opposite, it will be happy to answer. At SHADY TATTOO we work with single-use needles and sterile tools, and before the procedure we ask about your health, because your safety depends on it.
Age and ID
A reliable studio tattoos adults only and may ask for ID. At SHADY TATTOO we tattoo only people aged 18 and over. If someone “turns a blind eye” to age, that is a warning sign in other matters too.
3. Judge the consultation and communication
The way a studio replies to your first message says a lot about the whole collaboration.
Good signs
- Questions about placement, size and inspiration.
- Honest advice, e.g. that a design that is too small and very detailed may blur over time.
- Clear rules on booking, the deposit and rescheduling.
Bad signs
- A price given “blind”, without asking for details.
- Pressure to book a date immediately.
- No willingness to advise against anything.
A good tattoo artist will sometimes say “no” or “let’s do it differently”. That isn’t inflexibility – it’s care for a result you will live with.

4. Read reviews – but read them wisely
Reviews on Google and social media are a valuable source. Look not only at the average but at the content: do clients write about the atmosphere, the approach to a first tattoo, healing, contact after the session? A few detailed, varied reviews are worth more than many one-liners.
SHADY TATTOO is rated 5.0 (206 reviews) – we encourage you to read the reviews and form your own opinion.
5. Get to know the studio rules
A professional studio has written rules: how the deposit works, what happens if you are late or cancel, how to raise concerns. This protects both sides. At our studio a booking is confirmed by a deposit (the amount is set individually), and justified concerns about a completed tattoo can be raised within 14 days. Details are on the prices page and in the FAQ.
6. Don’t choose on price alone
We understand that budget matters. But corrections, a cover-up or removing a failed tattoo usually cost more – not only money, but also time and nerves. Instead of asking “where is it cheapest?”, ask “where will they do it well?”.
7. Trust your gut feeling
If you can, see the studio in person (ideally by appointment). Is it clean? Do you feel at ease? Does someone have time to answer your questions? It’s also worth getting to know the people who will tattoo you – we introduce our team on the about us page. With a first tattoo, the atmosphere matters a lot – stress affects how comfortable the session feels. If it’s your first time, see our first tattoo guide.
Pre-booking checklist
- A portfolio in the style you want, including photos of healed work.
- Single-use needles, sterile tools, a health questionnaire.
- A consultation with specific questions and honest advice.
- Detailed client reviews.
- Clear rules on the deposit, dates and complaints.
- A price given after seeing the design, not “blind”.
- Feeling good in the studio.
If you can tick every point, you’re in good hands. Before your session, also read how to prepare for a tattoo.
Frequently asked questions
Can I visit the studio before booking?
It’s a good idea if the studio allows it – you’ll see what the place looks like. At SHADY TATTOO visits are by appointment, so message or call us first.
Is a low price a bad sign?
Not always, but a price given “blind”, without any questions about the design, should be a warning sign.
How can I check whether a studio is hygienic?
Ask about single-use needles, sterile tools, how the workstation is protected and the health questionnaire. A good studio will gladly answer.
Can a studio refuse to do a tattoo?
Yes – for example for someone under 18, someone who is intoxicated, or when there are health contraindications, wounds or infections at the tattoo site.
