In short: yes, a tattoo usually causes discomfort – it can feel like scratching or burning. How intense it is depends on the placement, your individual sensitivity, the length of the session and how well you prepare.

We hear this question especially before a first tattoo. We won’t promise that “you won’t feel a thing” – that isn’t true. But good preparation really makes a difference. Below we explain what it depends on and what you can do to make the session as comfortable as possible.

What it feels like

It can feel like scratching or burning – a bit like a scratch repeated in the same spot. Outlines can feel sharper, shading more like a “spread-out” burning. It is very individual, though – two people can describe the same tattoo completely differently.

What affects how much it hurts

Placement on the body

This is the number one factor. It is generally accepted in the industry that areas with thin skin, close to bone or with many nerve endings – ribs, hands, feet, knees, elbows, neck – are more sensitive. Areas with thicker skin and a layer of muscle or tissue – the outer upper arm, forearm, calf, thigh – are usually easier to bear.

That is why the forearm, upper arm or calf are often chosen for a first tattoo. More on choosing a placement: first tattoo guide.

Individual sensitivity

Everyone has a different pain threshold. Emotions matter too – stress and tension can amplify the sensations.

Session length

The first hour usually goes more easily than the fourth. Over time the skin becomes more sensitive and the body gets tired. That is why large projects are split into several sessions; session length is agreed individually.

Style and technique

Dense shading and repeated passes over the same area (e.g. in realism) can feel different from single, thin lines.

How to reduce discomfort – this really works

Before the session

  • Get enough sleep. A tired body copes worse with the procedure.
  • Eat a proper meal. An empty stomach makes you more likely to feel weak.
  • Stay hydrated and bring water and a snack.
  • Avoid alcohol. It can increase bleeding and make the work harder. The studio may also refuse to tattoo someone who is intoxicated.
  • Don’t come with sunburnt or irritated skin.

During the session

  • Breathe calmly – holding your breath increases tension.
  • Say if you need a break. Short breaks are completely normal.
  • Distract yourself – headphones, a podcast, conversation.
  • Tell us if you feel unwell – dizziness or weakness is a signal to pause.

Medication and numbing

Don’t take painkillers or other substances before the session on your own without consulting a doctor – some affect blood clotting. Tell the tattoo artist about all the medication you take.

Pain after the session

After the procedure the tattooed area may be red, slightly swollen and tender – similar to irritated skin. Over the following days it will peel and itch. Don’t scratch or pick at scabs. The rules are described in our tattoo aftercare guide.

If, however, the pain, swelling or redness gets worse, or pus or a fever appears, contact a doctor immediately and let us know.

Tattoo pain myths

  • “The more tattoos you have, the less it hurts.” Experience helps you stay calm, but sensitive areas stay sensitive.
  • “Alcohol will help.” Quite the opposite – alcohol before a session is not advisable.
  • “I’ll get through it without eating.” An empty stomach makes you more likely to feel weak. Have a meal.

Fear of pain and your first tattoo

If you’re afraid of the pain, that’s completely normal. A few tips:

  • choose a smaller design in a less sensitive area,
  • tell the tattoo artist it’s your first time – at SHADY TATTOO we work without rushing,
  • book the session for a day when you have no other stressful commitments.

It’s best to talk this through at a consultation at our studio at ul. Głęboka 15/3 in Wieluń – together we’ll choose the placement and size. Short answers to other questions are in the FAQ.

Frequently asked questions

Which placement hurts the least?

Areas with thicker skin and muscle, such as the outer upper arm, forearm or calf, are generally easier to bear. Sensations are individual, though.

Do fine lines hurt less?

Not necessarily. Placement matters more than style.

Can I have a drink to make it hurt less?

No. Alcohol before a session is not advisable, and the studio may refuse to tattoo someone who is intoxicated.

Can I take a break during the session?

Yes, breaks are normal. If you feel unwell, tell us straight away.
