How long does a tattoo session take – and what does it depend on?

By the SHADY TATTOO team · 21 October 2026
In short: a tattoo session usually lasts from about an hour for a small design to several hours for a bigger piece, and large work is split across several sessions. The exact time depends on size, detail, style and placement – at SHADY TATTOO we agree session length individually for each project.
When you’re planning a tattoo, you want to know how much time to set aside – whether to take a day off, arrange childcare or plan the journey. As with price, the honest answer is: it depends on the design. Below we explain the general factors and typical industry ranges so you can plan your day. We’ll confirm the time for your tattoo at a consultation at our studio at ul. Głęboka 15/3 in Wieluń.
Please note: the ranges below are general industry estimates only. They are not a price list or a guarantee of how long the work will take at our studio. Every project is assessed individually.
What a visit involves
A session is more than the tattooing itself. A visit usually includes:
- Welcome and paperwork – a health questionnaire, age check (18+) and consent forms.
- Final design tweaks – any changes are made before tattooing starts.
- Skin prep and stencil – often with a test placement and adjustments.
- Tattooing – with short breaks.
- Covering the tattoo and aftercare instructions.
That’s why even a small tattoo needs more time than just the “buzz of the machine”.

Typical time ranges (industry-wide)
Small tattoos
Small designs, simple lettering, minimalist fine line – usually one short visit, often around one to two hours including preparation.
Medium pieces
A palm- or forearm-sized tattoo with shading – usually one longer session of several hours.
Large projects
Sleeves, backs, detailed realistic compositions – done over several sessions spread across weeks or months.
What makes a session longer
Detail and style
Realism and black & grey are built up in layers with smooth transitions, which takes time. A simple outline is quicker.
Placement
Ribs, hands, knees, neck – work in these areas is slower because the skin is thinner, moves more or is more sensitive.
Cover-ups
Covering an old tattoo needs thorough saturation and is often larger than the original.
How you’re feeling
Breaks are normal. If you need a moment, just say so – your comfort matters more than speed. For tips on reducing discomfort, see does getting a tattoo hurt?
Time and cost
Working time is one of the factors in the quote – read more in what affects the price of a tattoo.

Why we split large tattoos into sessions
Skin has its limits. Tattooing one area for a long time increases irritation, and fatigue – yours and the artist’s – can affect comfort and precision. Working in stages:
- helps healing,
- lets us check the healed result and plan the next layers,
- is simply more comfortable.
Sessions on the same area are usually spaced to allow healing – the surface of a tattoo typically heals in about 2–4 weeks. Your artist will set the exact gap.
How to prepare for a longer session
- Get a good night’s sleep – a tired body copes worse with discomfort.
- Eat a proper meal before your visit.
- Stay hydrated and bring water and a snack.
- Avoid alcohol before the procedure.
- Wear comfortable clothes that give easy access to the area and that you don’t mind getting ink on.
- Bring something to keep you occupied – headphones, a podcast, a book.
- Tell us about any conditions and medication before we start.

Punctuality and rescheduling
Your appointment is reserved just for you and confirmed with a deposit (the amount is set individually). If something comes up, let us know as soon as possible. You can reschedule no later than 3 days before the appointment. More on the prices page and in the FAQ.
After the session
Once we’re done, the tattoo is covered and you get aftercare instructions. The first few days are key – read our tattoo aftercare guide.
First tattoo?
A smaller design can be a good first tattoo – it’s a good way to see how you react without a session lasting several hours. Have a look at our first tattoo guide.
Summary
Session length depends on size, detail, style, placement and how you’re feeling. Small designs usually mean a short visit; large projects take several sessions. We’ll give you a time estimate for your tattoo once we’ve seen the design.
Frequently asked questions
Can I ask for a break during the session?
Yes. Short breaks for water, a snack or a stretch are completely normal – just say.
Can a large tattoo be done in one day?
Sometimes, but large projects are usually better split into stages – for comfort, healing and the quality of the result. We’ll decide together at the consultation.
Does session length affect the price?
Working time is one of the factors in the quote, alongside size, detail and the design. The final cost is agreed individually.
