Tattoo cover-up – when can an old tattoo be covered?

In short: a cover-up is usually possible when the new design can be bigger and darker than the old one, and the old tattoo isn’t very dark or densely filled. Whether it will work depends on assessing your specific tattoo – from a photo or in person.

A tattoo that didn’t turn out well, a design that no longer fits your life, an ex’s name – there are plenty of reasons to want an old tattoo covered. At SHADY TATTOO we do cover-ups, i.e. covering old tattoos with a new design; you can come for a consultation at our studio at ul. Głęboka 15/3 in Wieluń (by appointment). This article explains the general principles that decide whether a cover-up is possible, and how to prepare for one.

What a cover-up is

A cover-up is a new tattoo designed so that the old one stops being visible. It isn’t about “painting over” it with a solid block, but about a composition where the dark parts of the new design sit over the lines and fill of the old one, and the lighter elements fall on clear skin.

It’s one of the hardest jobs in tattooing and needs a well-thought-out custom design, not a ready-made pattern.

When a cover-up is usually possible – general factors

These are general industry principles. The final assessment is always made by the artist, based on your tattoo.

How dark the old tattoo is

Tattoo ink isn’t like opaque paint – a lighter colour won’t cover a darker one. The darker and more densely filled the old design, the harder it is to hide. Slightly faded, thin lines are usually the easiest case.

Size

The new design almost always has to be bigger than the old one. A small but dark tattoo may need a considerably larger composition.

Placement

There has to be room to make the design bigger. On fingers or in very tight spots, the options are more limited.

Skin condition

Scars, raised areas or marks from earlier treatments affect how the skin takes new ink.

Your flexibility

A cover-up limits the choice of subject and style. The best results come when you’re open to the artist’s suggestions on the subject, size and where the dark areas go.

Designs that cover well

In general, designs with dense shading, texture and natural shapes work better – flowers, leaves, animals, elements of nature. Strong shading in black & grey gives plenty of scope for hiding old lines. Delicate fine line work or minimalist designs with lots of bare skin are harder to use for covering.

When a cover-up may not be enough

With very dark, large tattoos, it’s common in the industry to lighten the old design first and only then do the cover-up. That’s something to discuss individually.

At SHADY TATTOO we also refresh older work and do cover-ups – ask us for details.

Sometimes a better option than covering completely is reworking the old tattoo – using some of its elements in a new composition.

How to prepare for a cover-up consultation

  1. Photograph the old tattoo – in good daylight, straight on, showing the whole area and a little skin around it.
  2. Measure it – give the dimensions in centimetres.
  3. Say what you want to change – a full cover or a rework?
  4. Share your inspiration – and be open to suggestions.
  5. Mention whether the tattoo is fully healed. The old tattoo must be completely healed.

Send this via the contact page – a photo of the area speeds up the initial assessment a lot.

How long a cover-up takes and what affects the cost

A cover-up is usually more work than a new tattoo of the same size: it’s larger, more saturated and the design is more complex. It often takes longer and may be split into sessions. We give a quote after seeing the tattoo – read more in what affects the price of a tattoo and how long does a tattoo session take?

Healing after a cover-up

The rules are the same as for any tattoo – see our tattoo aftercare guide. Once healed, sun protection matters.

How to avoid needing a cover-up in future

The cheapest cover-up is the one you never need. Before you choose a design, read how to choose a tattoo design and how to choose a tattoo studio. Corrections, cover-ups or removal usually cost more than a tattoo done well the first time.

Frequently asked questions

Can every tattoo be covered?

Not always. It depends on how dark, large and where the old tattoo is. We’ll assess it from a photo or at a consultation.

Does a cover-up have to be bigger?

Usually, yes – the new design is almost always larger than the one being covered.

Can I choose any design?

The choice is limited by the old tattoo. The best results come from being open to the artist’s suggestions.

Do you do cover-ups at SHADY TATTOO?

Yes, we do. You’ll find examples in our portfolio.
