Tattoos, exercise and sun – when can you get back to it?

In short: while your tattoo heals, avoid sun and sunbeds, swimming pools, saunas and intense training that strains the tattooed area. Once it’s healed, protect it with high-SPF sunscreen – the simplest way to keep its contrast for years.

A fresh tattoo is a wound. We say it a lot because it explains why you need to slow down for a while after your session. This article brings together the rules from our aftercare guide and adds general tips common in the industry. The most important advice, though, is always what your artist tells you after the session – the studio’s terms require clients to follow it strictly.

Why exercise and sun are bad for a healing tattoo

Sweat and friction

When you train, your skin sweats and clothes and equipment rub against the tattoo. Sweat and friction irritate healing skin, can contaminate the wound and pull off scabs – and a scab pulled off early risks patchy ink.

Stretching the skin

Exercises that strongly stretch the tattooed area (e.g. squats with a thigh tattoo, or pull-ups with one on the shoulder blade) can slow healing and increase swelling.

UV light

Sun irritates fresh skin and, in the long run, is one of the main reasons tattoos fade. This applies especially to soft transitions in black & grey and to fine lines.

Water

Pools, saunas, baths, the sea and lakes mean contact with bacteria and chemicals, and long soaking of the wound.

What to avoid while it heals

As our aftercare guide says, until the tattoo has healed, avoid:

  • swimming pools, saunas, baths and the sea,
  • sun and sunbeds,
  • tight clothes that rub,
  • intense training that strains the tattooed area.

The surface of a tattoo usually heals in about 2–4 weeks; deeper layers of skin take longer to recover.

When to get back to training – general tips

The information below reflects general industry practice, not individual advice. Decide on returning to a specific activity together with your artist.

SHADY TATTOO’s advice: go back to the gym about 2 weeks after your session.

The first few days

The most sensitive time. Rest from intense exercise is usually recommended, especially if it works the tattooed area. A walk is generally fine.

When the tattoo is peeling

About 1–2 weeks after the session, peeling and itching begin. If you go back to lighter exercise, choose moves that don’t strain or rub the tattoo.

Once the surface has healed

When the skin has stopped peeling and there are no scabs or redness, you can usually return gradually to full activity – still paying attention to hygiene.

How to train more safely while it heals

  • Think about timing. Planning a competition, a training camp or a beach holiday? Book your tattoo so healing doesn’t fall during that time.
  • Clean, loose clothing in natural fabrics that doesn’t press on the tattoo.
  • Clean hands and equipment – at the gym, wipe down mats and benches, and don’t rest the tattoo directly on equipment.
  • Wash the tattoo after training as instructed: lukewarm water, a mild fragrance-free cleanser, and pat dry with a paper towel.
  • Listen to your body. Increasing pain or swelling after training is a sign to ease off.

Contact sports

Martial arts, football or rugby mean a risk of knocks and scrapes. It’s generally advised to wait until the tattoo has healed, or to discuss it with your artist.

Swimming and water sports

Water is one of the things to avoid until the tattoo has healed. If you swim, plan a break from the pool before your session.

Tattoos and sun – short term and long term

While it heals

No tanning and no sunbeds. If you have to be out in the sun, cover the tattoo with loose clothing. General knowledge: sunscreen isn’t applied to a healing tattoo – protect it with clothing and shade (source: University of Queensland, news.uq.edu.au).

Once healed

High-SPF sunscreen and moisturising help keep sharpness and contrast for years. General knowledge: after healing, a water-resistant, broad-spectrum SPF 30+ sunscreen is recommended, reapplied about every 2 hours and after swimming (source: American Academy of Dermatology, aad.org). This is especially important for:

Holidays and a new tattoo

Getting a tattoo just before a beach holiday is a common mistake. It’s better to get it after you’re back, or plan ahead so it has time to heal. When planning, it helps to know how long a tattoo session takes and whether the design will need several visits.

When to see a doctor

Increasing pain, swelling, pus, fever or spreading redness are signs to contact a doctor straight away. Please let us know too.

Frequently asked questions

Can I go to the gym the day after my tattoo?

At SHADY TATTOO we recommend going back to the gym after about 2 weeks, and avoiding intense training that strains the tattooed area until then.

When can I go swimming?

Avoid swimming pools until the tattoo has healed.

Does SPF really make a difference?

Yes – once healed, high-SPF sunscreen and moisturising help keep the tattoo sharp and its contrast strong.

Can I sunbathe with a tattoo?

Not while it’s healing. After that – with high-SPF sunscreen on the tattoo.
